ETRETAT : MAGIC PEARL OF THE NORMANDY COAST
Holidays and weekends are also times when we want to enjoy invigorating breaks while discovering unique off-the-beaten-path locations beaten as on the Normandy Coast
in the seaside-resort of Etretat in Seine Maritime in the Normandy region which offers ideal conditions for practicing some great and local leisure activities in good balance with a rich and diverse environment.
Located in northwestern France, bordered by the English Channel on the Alabaster Coast, and fully integrated into the Pays de Caux region, Étretat boasts a coastline adorned with grey pebble beaches and imposing white chalk cliffs over 90 meters high, making it one of the most majestic natural sites in Europe. Historically, it was also a fishing village renowned during Roman times and for a considerable period lived to the rhythm of fishing activities, which can still be
seen today, particularly along the seafront, with the presence of capstans once used to haul boats up the pebbles, as well as the caloges, old thatched boats that are also a jewel of the local maritime heritage. Radiant and welcoming
seaside resort,
Etretat is also linked by the rise of sea bathing since the first part of the 19th century which since then
has seen its tourist population develop, integrating suitable facilities in parallel with regular visitors including charming
villas located both in the village center and on its heights, notably "Le Clos Lupin," which was the home of Maurice Leblanc, author of detective novels and creator of the character Arsène Lupin, particularly "The Hollow Needle," published in 1909, which features the adventures of the "Gentleman Burglar," as well as its casino and hotels with their shimmering architecture, just likeits beach huts before strolling through the village center with its covered market and
its numerous shops selling local products, as in its typical narrow streets dotted with brightly colored flowers.
A radiant territory that enchants with the diversity and variety of its landscapes, delighting hiking enthusiasts and
local leisure activities such as sea kayaking enthusiasts , whom we encounter on these clear and pristine waters,
integrating great gestures make it a very popular place for enthusiasts of this water sport, and this quality offering
and personalized adaptation, which is also found in the marked trails on the cliffs surrounding the resort, is very
appreciated by hikers whether on foot or mountain bike, it also includes sporting and ecological data which make this invigorating territory an asset, moreover located in one of the most beautiful regions of France.
A Vast Maritime Area Complemented by Unusual Encounters
Practicing these local leisure activities and having the pleasure of surfing on the water or exploring these large spaces by mountain bike also provides the opportunity to discover unique places also enhanced by fauna and flora that we enjoy admiring, alongside easy access to the sites in optimal safety conditions, as Philippe and Catherine LANGLAIS, originally from LENS and fans of sea kayaking and nature holidays, explain to me.
"The Normandy region boasts a wide variety of natural spaces, both maritime and terrestrial, and we love to recharge our batteries in Etretat and on the Alabaster Coast throughout the year. This includes our passion for sea kayaking, complementing the hiking we adore doing as a family whether on marked trails or along the cliffs that border this vast maritime area. We also enjoy unusual encounters with local wildlife, such as birds like the little egret, the northern gannet, the black-headed gull, and the common raven, as well as the flora, including endemic plant species that are a pleasure to discover, especially with the help of passionate botanists and nature guides who incorporate knowledge of the geology of the region."
