BY BICYCLE FROM YEU ISLAND TO NOIRMOUTIER
Located in the west of the Vendée department, the islands of Yeu and Noirmoutier, the first positioned off the coast of the Côte  de Lumière  20 kilometers from Saint Jean de Monts and the  second  near the  resort  of La  Barre de  Monts Fromentine are radiant
lands that enchant with the beauty and diversity of their landscapes, also integrating a rich cultural and environmental heritage that is interesting to discover by bicycle.
Our outings begins with the island of Yeu and before taking our bikes to crisscross this majestic island, we ride along the quays of PORT JOINVILLE which remind us that in these places steeped in history and until the 17th century this natural port was used as a  stopover  between  Bordeaux and  the  ports of the  North, notably by Breton  sailors which earned it
the  name  “Port  aux  Bretons” then “Port Breton”  and  was  then  renamed   Port Joinville  in 1846  in honor  of François d'Orléans Prince  de  Joinville  who  had  contributed  to  its  development. Stroll  through  the  small  towns in the  alleys
adjoining the quays are delightful with their alleys dotted with hollyhocks, adorned with the white facades of the houses with blue, red, grey or  green  shutters, which  are  the  very  expression of  traditional  architecture of the island.Riding a
bicycle  along  the  moorland  paths  that  lead  us to  the  port of  La  Meule is  pure  wonder  because, in addition to this
pleasant feeling of freedom, we can  admire this  magnificent wild,  steep and  jagged coast or  discover an unusual place
linked to the rich history of the island. The big advantage of the bicycle is its flexibility  and mobility  because, in addition to its  sporting  and  ecological  virtues, the  practice of  cycling in  these  radiant islands  is well  adapted and constitutes
the best way to discover them  by  being  close  to its  visible  nature in its  pure state. After a good seafood lunch on the
terrace on the port, heading  towards the old  castle on  the central  part of the  island which enchants with its imposing
architecture positioned on the seafront  before reaching  the large  lighthouse  and the  Pointe  du But further north. The particularity  of the  Isle of  Yeu is  also the  diversity  of its  coasts  which, in  its  eastern part,  is rather  sandy and green
similar to that found on the Vendée coast parallel  to its  so-called part  western coast  which is a wild, granite and rocky
coast mainly made up of coves and cliffs which it is pleasant to visitwhen we take the time to stop in all these spaces, so
beautiful and so varied, which are  offered to  us and  which we  admire without  moderation. Another particularity of the island of Yeu is the richness of its fauna andits flora through its heathers that we find on its moorland paths and nothing like a good swim in its small coves where we can come across seagulls and shelducks who  observe you with their beaks
with  such  particular  shapes. A  good  night  in  a  rural  cottage  in  Saint  Sauveur  before  heading towards  Pointe Des
Corbeaux located on the south-eastern  part of the  island, not  without having  passed along  Anse des  Vieilles which is delightful with its vibrant and shimmering landscapes adorned with multiple colors.

Noirmoutier: The Island of Mimosas

After a 45-minute crossing in a comfortable high-speed ship that connects Port Joinville to Fromentine La Barre De Monts, we head for the island of Noirmoutier which, in addition to its proximity to the continent and its easy access, is welcoming in its composition which has earned it the nickname Mimosa Island is delightful to admire, especially when it begins to bloom at the end of January. Before reaching the Barbatre station, we follow the salt marshes on tracks while observing salt workers who are the producers of what is called the white gold represented by the salt and the fleur de sel of Noirmoutier and who are, like the oyster farmers that we will meet on our return to the continent via the Gois

passage the affirmed expression of well-preserved ancestral traditions. Which is also pleasant on this island benefiting

benefiting from a micro climate and a significant level of annual sunshine, it is the variety and diversity of its natural spaces that can be found in its salt marshes, its famous white beach huts and its jetty completed by dunes bordering delightful beaches of fine sand decorated with pines trees and holm oaks complemented by Mediterranean-type

vegetation like in the Bois de la Chaise. An attractiveness that we find on these 2 islands is to also take the time to meet

the fishermen upon their return to the docks for observe the landing of their catches of the day, such as at the port

of Herbaudière located in the north-west part of the island, where lobsters, soles, spider crabs and crabs are landed and

then wonderfully prepared and cooked. The particularity of our territories and in particular of our islands is to preserve

traditions that we find in the professions in the same way as in gastronomy with traditional farm recipes passed down from generation to generation which are also found in another flagship product of the island which is the famous bonnotte which is a succulent potato which grows in sandy soil enriched with seaweed. Visiting the island of Yeu and Noirmoutier by bicycle is the simplest and most natural way to discover them. while rubbing shoulders with them very closely in unique places integrating all that nature has to offer that is most noble and these 2 islands are fascinating and

surprising because they can delight both nature lovers, sports enthusiasts and those who love wide open spaces, history enthusiasts, as their heritage and past are so rich, and artists who love colours and their varieties expressed as well in

broad daylight as well as at sunset on its majestic beaches and coasts full of emotion.
